Of the long time "name brands," Philips and Magnavox (same mfg.) are just about bottom of the list - way too many consumer complaints! But I'd rather have a Philips than a Vizio, Insignia, Element, Polaroid, or one of the other cheap, third tier, junk TVs that have come on the scene in the last couple of years. At least you have a chance of getting parts for a Philips/Magnavox when repairs are necessary.
For a 32" LCD, the two top dogs in performance and reliability are Panasonic and Sony. It's pretty much a tie. Get the one with the best price/warranty combo. Or, if these two are too pricey, look at the Toshiba, or even the Sharp 720p. Good hunting!
