Can most LCD TV's accept a 1080P signal if they are 720P?

If I have a 1080P source hooked up to a 720P TV, is it usual for the TV to be able to accept the source and downscale it, or would the output device need to be able to downscale the video for the TV?

Most 720p TVs will accept 1080p input from HDMI and will downscale it, but it is far better to set the source to output 720p directly.
