Will I miss out on much if I buy a TV with an ATSC tuner but not one with a QAM tuner?

To put all this in really simple terms, if you are connected to cable, your set's ATSC tuner does nothing. You might be able to get some free digital channels via the QAM tuner if you are connected directly to the cable (no set top box).

If you are connected to satellite, both your ATSC and your QAM tuners do nothing.

If you are connected to an OTA (over the air) antenna, your QAM tuner does nothing.

So to your final question, the answer is yes.
