Extension cord or adapter plug for refrigerator?

Hi

Why is it that on the refrigerator manual says "DO NOT use an extension cord or adapter plug and It must be plugged directly into a properly grounded three-prong receptacle" What will happen if I do use an extension cord?
There's no grounded 3 prong outlet in the kitchen.

All very good and TRUTHFUL answers. Now as far as Fire Codes, or The National Electrical Code, as with the fridge being a "Stationary" appliance, the extension cord "shall" be considered as "Permanent" wiring. And that's illegal, unsafe and a Code Violation.
What WILL happen? I can't see into the future. I can tell you what MIGHT happen:
You decide to go ahead and dismiss the warnings. And your fridge works. And works well. For months. You've stopped thinking about it. All the time, that cord is getting warmer. Then the insulation starts breaking down. At 2:00 in the morning, your smoke detectors go off. The insulation as frayed to a point that the shell becomes electrified. With no ground, the breaker (or fuses) don't have a clue that they are "supposed" to be tripping. With them not tripping, the fridge keeps running till the entire extension cords integrity is compromised and POOF! Fire. Got Insurance? All the insurance adjuster has to do is see the metal pats of said system & he(or she) will KNOW that that fridge was on an extension cord. Your claim is DENIED!
Worst case serino? Yes. Happened to a friend of mine, even though I warned him. Whatever your decision, Good luck in all you do & may God bless.
